Health Alert:
Extreme Heat Linked to More Cardiac ICU Admissions.
An analysis of a decade of hospital data found that exposure to unusually extreme heat for a given time of year was associated with a 35.6% higher likelihood of cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) admission within the following five days. During prolonged heat waves lasting six or more days, ICU admission rates nearly doubled. This increase is thought to be driven by physiological stressors such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, which can trigger arrhythmia or worsen underlying cardiovascular disease.

Diet:
Mediterranean Diet Associated with Improved Metabolic Health in Kids and Teens.
A systematic review and meta-analysis that included eight studies found that low adherence to the Mediterranean diet—an eating pattern centered on fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, olive oil, and whole grains while limiting red and processed meats, dairy, saturated fats, and refined sugars—is associated with a two-fold increased risk of poor metabolic health in children and teenagers.

Exercise:
Physical Inactivity Linked to Reduced Life Expectancy in Severe Mental Illness.
Individuals with severe mental disorders—including schizophrenia, major depression, and bipolar disorder—spend much of their waking hours sedentary and rarely meet physical activity recommendations of at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week. This lack of physical activity is thought to be a key contributing factor to the increased risk of cardiometabolic disease in this population, helping to explain the 10–20-year reduction in life expectancy associated with severe mental illness.

Chiropractic:
Sedentary Behaviors, Physical Activity, and Neck Pain Risk in College Students.
A study of 126 university students found that greater sedentary time was associated with a higher risk of neck pain, disability, and reduced range of motion. In contrast, students with higher levels of physical activity demonstrated better cervical spine function and a lower risk of neck pain.

Mental Attitude:
Healthier Lifestyle May Reduce Stroke Risk.
A recent study found that older adults who adopted a healthier lifestyle—which may include behaviors like a healthier diet, exercise, reduced sedentary time, not smoking, managing stress, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption—had a 23% lower risk of stroke over the following seven years when compared with participants who maintained their baseline lifestyle. Conversely, study participants who transitioned to a less healthy lifestyle during this time frame experienced a 41% high risk of stroke.

Drones Could Speed Life-Saving Defibrillators to Cardiac Arrest Victims.
Researchers at the Duke University School of Medicine report that because most heart attacks occur at home, patients may wait up to ten minutes for emergency medical personnel to arrive to begin care. To improve survival, municipalities in North Carolina and Virginia are testing programs that use drones to deliver an automated external defibrillator (AED), enabling bystanders to begin treatment before paramedics arrive.
