Health Alert:
Opioid Use During Pregnancy Doubled in the Last Decade.
An analysis of records from more than 5.5 million pregnancies found that opioid use by expectant mothers increased from .14% to .33% between 2008 and 2020. Experts note that pregnancy-related opioid use doubles the risk for delivery complications, elevates the risk of preterm birth by 71%, and leads to significantly worse outcomes for infants, including a greater need for neonatal intensive care.

Pre-Game Exercises May Reduce Low Back Pain Risk in Golfers.
Due to the forceful torque associated with swinging a golf club, low back pain is a common complaint among golfers. In a study of 45 adolescent golfers, researchers found that a pre-game low back pain prevention program—core stabilization exercises, hip and thoracic mobility work, leg and glute strength training, and motor control and swing-specific drills—was associated with improvements in hip rotation range of motion and trunk endurance, adaptations that may help reduce the risk of low back pain in the future.

Manual Therapies May Improve Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Treatment Outcomes.
In patients receiving treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome, a recent study found that combining strength-building exercises with hip and knee mobilization and soft-tissue therapies was associated with greater improvements in pain and function than exercises alone. Doctors of chiropractic commonly integrate manual therapies with therapeutic exercises when managing musculoskeletal disorders, including patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Wearable Sleeve May Detect Frailty Early in Seniors.
Researchers at the University of Arizona have developed a mesh sleeve worn on the lower thigh that measures leg acceleration, gait symmetry, and step variability to help detect early signs of frailty in older adults. Wearable technologies like this may enable earlier identification and treatment of frailty, potentially reducing the risk of falls and hospitalizations that can negatively affect independence, quality of life, and longevity.
