Health Alert:
Addressing Inflammation May Be Key to Reducing Cancer Treatment-Related Fatigue.
Researchers from University of California, Los Angeles monitored nearly 200 early-stage breast cancer patients throughout treatment and identified an association between higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins and both general and physical fatigue. The finding may help to explain why interventions such as exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness—all of which help reduce inflammation—lessen fatigue in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Diet:
Mediterranean Diet Benefits Moderate Psoriasis Patients.
In a recent study, researchers observed that psoriasis patients who switched to the Mediterranean diet—an eating pattern focused on fruit, vegetables, nuts, fish, olive oil, and whole grains while avoiding red and processed meats, dairy, saturated fats, and refined sugars—experienced a 75% or greater reduction in symptoms within 16 weeks. The research team suspects the benefits may be attributed to the diet’s ability to reduce oxidative stress and calm immune-related inflammation.

Exercise:
Aquarobics an Option for Seniors with Chronic Low Back Pain.
Patients under treatment for chronic low back pain are often advised to engage in physical activity both to help manage their present condition and to reduce the risk of recurrence. A study that included 80 older women with chronic low back pain found that engaging in water-based aerobics twice a week for twelve weeks not only benefits functional mobility but also sleep and cognitive health.

Mental Attitude:
Mom’s Mental Health Directly Affects Kids’ Mental Health.
University of Manchester researchers report they have observed a direct association between a mother’s feelings of stress and unhappiness and symptoms of anxiety, worry, and emotional distress in her children, while no such direct link was seen with fathers. The research team posits that efforts to better support maternal mental health could be key to improving emotional outcomes among children.
