Health Alert:
Dehydration Boosts Stroke Risk in Older Adults.
An analysis of data concerning 3.12 million elderly adults revealed that dehydration is associated with nearly a fourfold increase in risk of intracerebral hemorrhage, about a twofold increase in risk of ischemic stroke, and close to a threefold increase in risk of transient ischemic attack. Among individuals with diabetes, dehydration elevates the risk even further, especially for ischemic stroke.

High Fruit Intake May Keep Inflammation at Bay.
Chronically elevated levels of inflammatory biomarkers in the blood are associated with increased risk of several chronic diseases. Studies have linked higher intake of fruit with lower levels of inflammation, which researchers attribute to their rich concentrations of polyphenols and other phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties.

A Connection Between Lifestyle and Dementia.
According to a recent study, cognitively normal older adults with higher dementia risk scores tend to have lower levels of key brain chemicals—GABA, N-acetylaspartate (tNAA), and choline (tCho)—which are linked to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, bad sleep hygiene, physical inactivity, and social isolation. The findings suggest that steps toward a healthier lifestyle may help preserve these neurochemicals, potentially staving off cognitive decline and dementia.
