Diet:
How a High-Fat Diet Disrupts Metabolic Health.
Phosphorylation is a biochemical process in which a phosphate group is added to a molecule, typically a protein, to regulate its function, activity, or signaling within cells. MIT researchers found that a high-fat diet alters phosphorylation patterns on key metabolic enzymes in mice, disrupting their normal activity and contributing to insulin resistance and oxidative stress. However, supplementing with an antioxidant reversed many of these phosphorylation changes and improved metabolic function, suggesting a potential dietary strategy for mitigating high-fat diet-induced metabolic dysfunction.

Managing Low Back Pain in Martial Artists.
Non-specific low back pain is a common complaint among karate practitioners, which can adversely affect their mobility, flexibility, and overall athletic performance. A recent study found that both mobilization therapy and core stabilization exercises are effective interventions for managing low back pain in this demographic, with mobilization providing faster pain relief. Doctors of chiropractic are known to use these and other therapies in the management of non-specific low back pain.

Depression May Set Stage for Parkinson’s.
Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, researchers report that depression during middle or old age is associated with a 53% increased risk for developing Parkinson’s disease. It’s suggested that inflammation, oxidative stress, and dopaminergic dysfunction associated with depression may also play a role in Parkinson’s pathophysiology.
